Day 10 - Green Island Scooterism
|
| |
SO June 5: Taitung, Green Island
5.30am: Alarm is ringing. Quickly packed the stuff, got a nice omelette made by my host who was already up even earlier than me, rode the scooter to the rental place where I was supposed to be picked up a small minibus with other travellers to Green Island at 6.20. At 6.20 I called the contact to enquire if I was waiting at the right spot, turned out that he just forgot about me and already left. At least he turned back to pick me up with his bus full of sleepy Taiwanese who had the same destination as me. Some 20 minutes later we found ourselves at the Taitung harbor, among loads of people who wanted to go to Green Island as well. The ship left timely at 7.30am. Well, I have to say that I never experienced seasickness before, and also ignored the warnings I got from different people (among even NYC). The sea didn’t seem to be „rough“. However when I woke up from a small nap aboard, my stomach felt really weird. 30 minutes of the cruise already over, still it was taking 15 more minutes to finally get there. Looking around in the cabin, I wasn’t the only one encountering problems and just focused to look on the straight line of the horizon outside through the bull’s-eye of my seat. (After reading my guidebook, the remark of the author, an experienced commuting clerk taking ferry everyday in New York, said that he only had to vomit twice being on a ship in his life, once on the way to Green Island, and once on the way back.) Upon arrival at the Green Island harbor I first got myself a coffee at the small Coffee store in the area and contacted my accomodation – the one in Taitung! Since I had unfortunately booked an accomodation in Taitung which I thought to be on Green Island! Turned out they had a friend on Green Island who still had some vacancies. Well, he didn’t. The whole island was overbooked. Eventually I was able to handle out a little bit more upper class accomodation, which did not matter to much to me that day, since otherwise I would just lose time to enjoy the island. The scooter for my travelling (only mean of transportation) however, I got by the first intended host and started to circle the island counter-clockwise at high noon... At least I am tanned now. It took maybe two hours to make the tour and back in the main village grabbed some sashimi for lunch/dinner (should be my last one, unfortunately they sold out really quick). Scooter riding again back to the (probably) only swimming beach close to the lighttower and then back to the west coast to see the sunset behind Taiwan. Amazing.. Head back to the accomodation for some presleep and then out again to see the stars next to the „Sleeping Beauty“ (rock formation at the east coast of Green Island). Before I figured out that I would probably my prebooked train from Taitung to Hualien, so I decided to try to get on board of the earlier ferry the next day, thus went to sleep rather early again. Too bad, I wish I could have stayed some more days on this island and just relax... (well there was no sashimi, but nonetheless)
