Through the “Youth Trekker’s Wanted” campaign, the National Youth Commission (NYC) has over the past three years awarded travel funds to nearly 50 youths from around the world to help them achieve their travel dreams in Taiwan. NYC is again welcoming international youth to Taiwan for the 4th “Youth Trekker’s Wanted Campaign”. Applications must be submitted by December 11th, 2011. We encourage all international youths aged 18~30 (between Jan 1st, 1981 ~ Dec 31, 1993) who love to travel and share their travel experiences to submit a Taiwan itinerary for consideration. Submitted itineraries must be 10 days or longer and center on a theme chosen by the applicant. Once completed, itineraries must be uploaded to the activity’s official website. We will award the best 20 entrants with US$2,000 ~ US$3,000, good toward making your Taiwan dream trip come true!
Although Kim Hana, Shen Nalai and Chao Chuyan were all 3rd Youth Trekkers Wanted finalists from Korea, they approached their in-depth Taiwan adventures from wholly different angles. Avid art enthusiast Kim scoured northern Taiwan’s artistic side, visiting the city’s Fine Arts Museum, National Palace Museum, art galleries in Sanxia, the Taipei Confucius Temple and much more. Every day brought new excitement and discovery as she delved further into Taiwan’s aesthetic heart. When in need of a rest, she often found a café with picturesque views and composed an inspired sketch or two. By the end of her trip, diary entries, sketches, brochures and other mementos of places visited filled Kim’s field book – testimony to her heartfelt journey across Taiwan.
Shen had already visited Taiwan twice and this time used her trek to uncover awesome Taiwan destinations still “undiscovered” by mainstream tourism. Traveling mostly by rail, she targeted such hidden gems as Yingge, Beipu’s Old Street, Luodong Night Market, and Meinung Folk Village. Despite the language barrier, locals in the bucolic hill valley town of Pingxi managed to brief Shen on the story behind their town’s sky lantern traditions. She even wrote blessings on her own sky lantern before sending it heavenward. Chu designed her trek as an adventure from the start, mostly shunning public transportation to see the country by foot. On a forested road in Hualien County Chu met up with a group of Taiwan youth who joined her on a white water rafting adventure down the lushly forested Xiuguluan River. She was touched by the enthusiasm and friendliness of her Taiwanese companions – every encounter along the way added new and happy memories to Chu’s happy Taiwan trek.
