Through the “Youth Trekker’s Wanted” campaign, the National Youth Commission (NYC) has over the past three years awarded travel funds to nearly 50 youths from around the world to help them achieve their travel dreams in Taiwan. NYC is again welcoming international youth to Taiwan for the 4th “Youth Trekker’s Wanted Campaign”. Applications must be submitted by December 11th, 2011. We encourage all international youths aged 18~30 (between Jan 1st, 1981 ~ Dec 31, 1993) who love to travel and share their travel experiences to submit a Taiwan itinerary for consideration. Submitted itineraries must be 10 days or longer and center on a theme chosen by the applicant. Once completed, itineraries must be uploaded to the activity’s official website. We will award the best 20 entrants with US$2,000 ~ US$3,000, good toward making your Taiwan dream trip come true!
3rd Youth Trekkers Wanted finalist Matthias Franziskus Durrer of Switzerland had previously been in Taiwan as an exchange student at National Taiwan University. An avid street dancer for over a decade, this time Matthias trekked around Taiwan learning local dance moves and sharing experiences and techniques. New friends everywhere were more than willing to answer his questions and share in his journey. In one special encounter, a friendly bed and breakfast owner treated Matthias to a sumptuous local feast. Another special memory came at three in the morning. Near the end of a long hike into Tainan, Matthias, tired and weighed down under a heavy backpack, was still a hard walk away from his B&B when a motorcycle emerged from the otherwise empty night. The driver stopped and asked if he’d like a lift. For Matthias, the moment perfectly captured Taiwan’s affable warmth and goodwill.
Matthias also joined in a street dance competition. All were hyped as DJs took the booth and set the groove. The contestants invested their all and although Matthias didn’t place he was glad to share his moves with Taiwanese who love the art form as much as he does.
Rich culture … Lovely scenery … Friendly people. Would you like a grand tour of Taiwan? Enjoy your Taiwan holiday in your own creative way!
